Leaving Nothing Behind
Yukata believes that a mattress is more than just comfort. Behind its softness, many conventional mattresses are made from petroleum-based foams and steel springs that require significant energy to produce and leave long-lasting waste. A single mattress can equal the carbon footprint of driving thousands of kilometers, while foam materials may take up to 500 years to decompose in landfills.
That is why Yukata takes a more responsible approach. By using natural materials such as latex, wool, and cotton, comfort is achieved with a lighter environmental impact. Through modular design, recycled components, and local production, each mattress becomes a more conscious and sustainable choice.
The hospitality industry faces a similar challenge. Hotels contribute around 1 percent of global carbon emissions, and a single hotel room can generate up to 60 kilograms of CO₂ per night — a figure that multiplies across millions of rooms worldwide.
This is why Yukata creates mattresses and bedding accessories that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Because true rest is not only about physical comfort, but also peace of mind — knowing that your choices help protect the world we share.
Why do hotels offer a better sleeping experience?
Hotels typically use high-thread-count mattresses, soft/firm pillows, and extra-soft mattress toppers. This combination promotes greater relaxation and reduces pressure on the back.
Hotel rooms with neutral and warm colors are excellent for sleep. Dim lighting, blackout curtains, and soundproofing help the brain transition to rest mode more quickly.
A temperature of 20–24°C is optimal for restful sleep in a hotel room. This is because it allows for a break from daily routines and creates a sense of “vacation” or a break from stress.
Psychologically, hotels often use signature scents and high cleanliness standards. A tidy and fragrant room calms the mind, creating a placebo effect that promotes restful sleep.
Yukata Mattress Material:

Biocel.
Biocel (generally based on cellulose fibers like TENCEL™/lyocell) is derived from natural materials like sustainably managed wood pulp. Biocel is great for mattresses because it enhances comfort and health. It’s ideal for mattress brands that want to offer a premium sleep experience while being environmentally conscious.
The fine fiber structure creates a silky, comfortable feel. It’s suitable for sensitive skin and provides a more premium sleeping experience.
Biocel is highly breathable, helping to maintain a cool temperature. It absorbs moisture, making the mattress feel cooler and less stuffy.
The fibers are able to absorb moisture better than regular fabrics/cotton. This helps reduce the dampness caused by sweating while sleeping.
Because of its ability to control moisture, the growth of bacteria and fungi can be minimized. This creates a cleaner and healthier sleeping environment.
Latex.
Latex is a natural material derived from the sap of rubber trees. It has elastic properties that conform to body contours well, providing more even pressure on the shoulders, back, and hips. Latex is superior to petroleum-based foams due to its high durability.
Natural latex is known for its higher durability than conventional foam. Its cellular structure is less prone to collapse, so the mattress remains stable and comfortable for a long time.
Natural latex is naturally more resistant to mites, mold, and bacteria. It is suitable for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
The latex structure has open pores (open cells) that facilitate air flow. This makes the mattress feel cooler and does not retain excess heat.
Latex is able to absorb movement well. If your partner moves next to you, the vibrations are less noticeable—making for a restful sleep.
Wool.
Wool has the unique ability to maintain a stable temperature. It feels warm in cold weather, and cool in hot weather. This material makes for a more comfortable night’s sleep without feeling stuffy. Sheep’s wool provides premium comfort, natural temperature regulation, healthier sleep quality, and environmental friendliness.
The wool layer provides a naturally soft sensation while helping to distribute body pressure more evenly. It doesn’t deflate easily like synthetic fibers.
Sheep’s wool fibers are naturally resistant to mites, mold, and bacteria because they don’t create a damp environment. They are suitable for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
Wool absorbs moisture (sweat) without feeling wet, then releases it back into the air. As a result, the mattress surface remains dry and comfortable.
Sheep’s wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable material, making it more environmentally friendly than synthetic materials.
